- The task is to make the C64 load programs faster, without making it
- incompatible with most software. The FASTLOAD cartridge that I have
- had since it came out does this. Unfortunately, it doesn't do it very
- well. I once wrote up a bug list, but the single worst one is that
- saving programs to the 1541 often does not work. At best you get a
- "drive not ready", quite often you get the dreaded "dir error" which
- means you have to fix the directory with a sector editor, except in one
- case it wiped out header block (18,0) and the only easy fix was to copy
- all the files onto a newly formatted disk. What I've taken to doing is
- to reset the 1541 with @u; before every SAVE, that keeps the problem at
- bay but sometimes I forget and get a trashed disk again.
-
- This is one of 10-15 serious bugs the thing has (if anyone wants the
- whole list I've got it in my archive somewhere.) On the other hand,
- FASTLOAD breaks almost no software. Is there a better way?
-
- I quite often hear the "Mach 5" cartridge mentioned. What does it do?
- How compatible is it? Is it a Fastload knockoff with all the same bugs
- (like the one my brother has, that says "JET LOAD" instead of "FASTLOAD")?
-
- And then there's the mysterious JiffyDOS. I looked at CMD's web site,
- and it said nothing useful about it. How compatible is this? What
- does it speed up? And what does it break? I've lurked on this
- newsgroup and read about temporary storage it grabs at address $9xxx...
- that would break almost any serious C64 software!
-
- Educate this out-of-touch-since-1985 C64 oldtimer.
